This week's Lee-Scott Athlete of the Week is Clay Garner, a senior who plays right outside back on the Warriors' soccer team.
The Auburn Villager: What are the responsibilities of playing right outside back?
Clay Garner: I like being the last person I can stop a goal or stop someone coming in to score a goal, and then I don't have to worry about someone else messing up or not being able to do anything about it and I can stop it.
AV: Does it get pretty physical back there?
CG: It does.
AV: Have you been able to avoid getting any yellow cards?
CG: Yes. I have not gotten a yellow card ever.
AV: Did you have any pro players you emulated growing up?
CG: Usually, I played an offensive position, but this year our coach changed me to defense, so it's just weird getting used to that. But I like it.
AV: Do you ever get the chance to go on offense, too?
CG: Yes. My position, you make runs to the offensive side of the field with the ball.
AV: Passing is a big part of the position. Do you have any special trick to hit the ball just right to a teammate?
CG: I just kick it and hope for the best.
AV: Do you have any favorite pro players that were role models?
CG: (Lionel) Messi. Cristiano Ronaldo. People like that. Messi was just so fundamental, and Cristiano Ronaldo was fundamental also. It was just really cool. I've always tried to be like them on the field.
AV: Do you have nay Premier or MLS teams that you follow?
CG: I like Atlanta United, and then I also like Manchester United and Arsenal.
AV: Is it nice to have a team so close like Atlanta United?
CG: Yes, sir. It's really fun to watch that.
AV: Have you been able to make a game yet?
CG: No. sir. I really want to.
AV: Do you play any other sports?
CG: I used to play basketball, but not anymore.
AV: Do you have any hobbies?
CG: I do Young Life. Young Life is a Christian organization where you just learn about Jesus.
AV: How is the season going so far?
CG: We are 12 or 13 and 1.
AV: What are the goals for the rest of the year?
CG: Win a state championship.
AV: Do you have any plans for after you graduate?
CG: Going to college, just trying to figure out what I want to do . I don't really have any ideas really right now.
AV: Do you know where you're heading?
CG: Southern Union is where I'm going to college. And hopefully after Southern Union I can go to North Alabama. But I'm not really sure what I want to major in or anything.
