After pulling out a dramatic win over rival Opelika, the Auburn High football team will hit the road Friday for its region-opener against Enterprise.
The match-up against the Wildcats will be a big challenge for the Tigers, said AHS coach Adam Winegarden.
"It’s tough to play at Enterprise," he said. "They’ve got a very good football team, well coached. It’s a long trip for us. It will be a great challenge for us just from a preparation standpoint and then going and competing at a high level in a hostile environment."
The Tigers haven't won on the road against Enterprise since 2011, but bested the Wildcats at home 48-18 last season.
Winegarden said he talked about preparing mentally for a tough road game like this with his players.
"You talk about those things with the players, so they kind of know what to expect and anticipate," Winegarden said. "At the same time, to be a good football and to compete at a high level we’re going to have to go play in games like this and be successful in games like this. That’s just part of it."
He added that he thinks the Tigers fighting through adversity in its game against Opelika will help them going forward.
"I think it was the fact that they had to battle through some adversity, overcome errors and just (have) that mindset to be successful," he said. "I think that’s big for them from a developmental standpoint, and hopefully it will be something they build upon going into this week."
