In the spotlight this week is student-athlete Lauren Hughes, a senior defensive specialist on the Tigers' volleyball team
Auburn Villager: When did you get your start playing volleyball?
Lauren Hughes: Probably sixth grade. I used the college coach live up the street from me, and he got me into it, and then I tried out for school.
AV: What do you like most about playing volleyball?
LH: I like just the team dynamic. Everyone has to be on their game and have the team chemistry for everything to work out.
AV: What's the biggest challenge about playing your position?
LH: Probably positioning. When the other team his hitting, you have to be in the right spot.
AV: Did you have anyone show you the ropes that you looked up to as a role model?
LH: Upperclassmen through the years — just watching them and them giving me tips because they want everyone to get better.
AV: How is your season going so far?
LH: It's so good. We made it past regionals, and we haven't done than in over 10 years, so that's exciting. And then, since it's senior year, I always wanted to get past the first round, and we finally did. It's really exciting. Our record is really good; it's like 32-12.
AV: So it feels good to finally get this kind of season as a senior?
LH: Yeah. It's awesome, and I love everyone on my team. It's just great team chemistry.
AV: You also do CrossFit. How did you get into that?
LH: I always watched it online, and I met a friend who did it, and she got me into it. It's just awesome; it's so fun.
AV: What do you get out of doing CrossFit?
LH: It helps my volleyball in so many different ways, just getting a stronger serve and being faster. It just works everything that you have to do in sports.
AV: As a senior, do you know what you want to do after you graduate?
LH: Yeah. I want to go to Mississippi State for kinesiology.
AV: What attracted you to kinesiology?
LH: It was just like with CrossFit and I've always loved sports, and I thikn ti's really interesting, the movement of muscles.
AV: Do you have any hobbies outside of CrossFit and volleyball?
LH: Not really. I just like to hang out with my friends.
