Auburn residents have a special opportunity this year to spread Christmas cheer overseas.
An address has been provided that allows locals to send letters, drawings or other holiday cheer to soldiers from Alabama who are deployed in Afghanistan.
There are about 20 to 25 soldiers from Alabama in the group — some of which are volunteers. Gen. (Ret.) Wendell McLain encourages residents to take the time to send them a letter, expressing gratitude for their sacrifices.
"Really, they just need the kind words of encouragement and support, just letting them know how proud of them you are," he said. "I think they want that more than anything else."

McLain said the unit is a logistics team.
"They provide logistical support for other units, and this unit is made up of people from all different units across the Alabama National Guard," he said.
In order for the soldiers to receive holiday letters before Christmas, McLain encouraged residents to send their mail off as soon as possible.
