If you're seeking a little outdoor fun and exploration to help you break out of the coronavirus containment blues, the city of Auburn's Itty Bitty Scavenger Hunt has you covered.
The scavenger hunt, which begins Friday, will send participants around town to find 25 Itty Bitty sites, thumbnails of which are featured on Page A5 of this week's Villager.
Last year, the hunt highlighted historic sites for Alabama's Bicentennial Celebration. This year, the hunt turns the spotlight on Auburn Parks and Recreation, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary.
"We're highlighting 25 spots, like parks, our buildings, different things like that," said Sarah Cook, special events coordinator for the city. "I don't think people really think about Auburn Parks and Rec turning 50 or being a certain age, but since it is the 50th anniversary it's so exciting to be able to show the community what our department has to offer. This is a way, if you're new to town or if you don't really know what we have to offer, this is a good way to get out and see what all amenities we have."
The scavenger hunt is also a good way to venture out of the house with your family in a safe and responsible manner during the coronavirus pandemic.
"We've done this for multiple years, but this year I think it's especially important because this is a great way for families to get out and social distance and feel safe but also have a fun thing to do in Auburn," said Cook.
Those wanting to take part in the hunt may pick up packets at any Parks and Rec building in the city or download it online at www.auburnalabama.org/parks. The packet will contain three forms — an answer sheet, a picture sheet and a hint sheet.
"Each spot, we took a snapshot of something at the location," she said. "We'll also be posting hints every day, Monday through Friday, for the month of August on our Active Auburn Facebook page."
All answers sheets are due by 5 p.m. on Aug. 31 and may be turned in at the Harris Center.
Those who have correctly identified all 25 sites will be entered into a drawing for one of the hunt's five grand prizes. Winners will be announced and contacted on Sept. 4 and receive a gift basket that includes items from local businesses.
You can receive the daily hints at facebook.com/activeauburn or on Active Auburn's Instagram page, @activeauburnal.
