The vision for the old Burger King and Tiger Rags properties on South Gay Street is coming into focus, as plans to include a grocery store as part of re-development are set to come before the Planning Commission next month.
The Planning Commission will hear a conditional use request for a grocery store at its next meeting on Aug. 13, which will be held virtually.
The request is being made on behalf of Multi Aubal GS, LLC, which bought the three parcels of land included in the development in 2019 for $10.75 million, according to Lee County property records.
A representative of McWane Inc., a Birmingham firm that is spearheading the project, declined to comment at this time.
The addition of a grocery store to the retail landscape in downtown Auburn will check off a long-wanted item on the city's commercial wish list for the area. A grocery store was part of the city's public-private partnership for a development in the Municipal Parking Deck area that ultimately fell apart in 2016.
The development of an urban grocery in the core of downtown was also one of the key objectives identified in the Downtown Master Plan.
The Planning Commission will meet at 5 p.m. via Zoom on Aug. 13. A public hearing for the request will be included on the agenda.
