Student housing on Glenn Avenue

After postponing consideration of the item at its last meeting, the Auburn City Council approved a zoning ordinance amendment Tuesday that will lower the allowable bed density in Urban Neighborhood-West.

The change will lower the allowable bed density from 255 beds per acre to 170 beds, a move aimed at curbing the prevalence of new private dormitory developments in UN-W, which has seen multiple large projects completed or under construction over the past several years.

Council members unanimously approved the measure.

In other business, the Council denied an amendment, by a 5-4 vote, to the Planned Development District designation for the Hamilton Place shopping center on Moores Mill Road after many residents of the Bent Brooke subdivision across the street from the planned development spoke out against the measure, citing safety concerns with sight lines and traffic as the main concerns.

The proposed project would have brought a professional office park to the property across the street from the subdivision.

The Council did approve, though, a rezoning of the 4.21-acre property located at 2449 Moores Mill Road from Rural to Limited Development District.
