The Auburn community is invited to honor those who have served our country at the 2022 Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 11. Beginning at 10 a.m., the City of Auburn will hold a ceremony at the Veterans Memorial located at the northeast corner of Ross Street and Glenn Avenue.
Mayor Ron Anders will officiate the ceremony, and U.S. Army veteran Maryshay Ray will be this year's speaker. Pastor Jeff Damron from Union Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will deliver the invocation, and the East Samford School Choir will perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Land That We Love."
Attendees are encouraged to park at Felton Little Park, the East Glenn Avenue Municipal Parking Lot and at the Douglas J. Watson Municipal Complex. Parking for the disabled will be available on Ross Street between Glenn Avenue and Harper Avenue, which will be closed to through traffic during the ceremony.Â
In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the City Council Chamber at 141 N. Ross St.
The Auburn Chamber of Commerce, located at 714 E. Glenn Ave., will hold a Veterans Day reception immediately following the city's ceremony.Â
Downtown parking kiosk installation underway
Public Works is partnering with Engineering Services to install four new parking kiosks in downtown Auburn over the next several weeks. One kiosk will be installed on Tichenor Avenue, two will be installed on North College Street and one will be installed on East Magnolia Avenue.
Work will include minor sidewalk demolition to make new electrical connections and install the kiosks and signage.Â
Adjacent parking spaces may close periodically during installation. Sidewalk closures are not expected, but pedestrians should use caution when traveling in work areas.
Work began on Tuesday and is expected to be completed by Nov. 18.
Invasive Plant removal day Saturday
The City of Auburn is inviting volunteers to help remove invasive plant species along the Charlotte and Curtis Ward Bike Trail adjacent to Shell Toomer Parkway on Saturday. Work will take place between 8 a.m. and noon.
Volunteers will work alongside trained staff and Auburn Tree Commission members to learn to identify and properly remove common invasive plants such as privet, elaeagnus, Callery pear, chinaberry, mimosa and other common problem plants.
Volunteers should meet at the intersection of Shell Toomer Parkway and Canary Drive. Volunteers should wear long pants, closed-toe shoes and gloves. Extra tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring pruners, lopping shears and small pruning saws, if available. This project is open to volunteers big and small; kids are welcome to help out.
