Kreher Preserve to host gardening camp
The Kreher Preserve & Nature Center will host “Can You Dig It,” a gardening camp for upcoming third- through seventh-graders from July 28-30.
Taught by the Kreher Preserve’s Cyndi Czerkawski, the camp will offer an educational look at gardening and allow children to learn where their food comes from.
Campers will design and implement a themed garden, including getting their hands dirty by learning the tricks to planting successful and healthy plants.
Campers will harvest fresh vegetables directly from the garden, exploring how to determine ripeness and the best time to pick. And campers will create delicious snacks and learn how to use their harvest in many simple and quick recipes.
Finally, campers will get to join a field trip to community gardens in the area to witness, firsthand, the diversity of crops that can be grown in Alabama, the direct social benefit of gardening, and the impact vegetable gardening can have on all of our lives.
“Can You Dig It” Gardening Camp runs from July 28 through July 30, from 8 a.m. until noon (drop off begins at 7:45 a.m.).
The camp is $125 per camper for all three days and includes a daily snack, all camp activities, and a gardening starter kit. Membership with the Kreher Preserve & Nature Center is required. A discount of 10 percent per camper is available for siblings living in the same household.
