On May 11, Mother’s Day weekend, the Auburn University Regional Airport is bringing the first true airshow to this area since 1984.

Starting at 9 a.m. attendees of the Auburn-Opelika Airshow will be able to watch aerobatic displays, see vintage warbirds, participate in Touch a Truck and see the newly constructed terminal at the Auburn University Regional Airport.

“We are expecting a little more than 10,000 people at the airshow,” said Beth Witten, airshow coordinator. “We are really looking forward to being able to bring aviation to the forefront.”

Jim Cook, a local pilot whose YAK-9 will be featured at the airshow said that there will be a lot of acts that crowds will not want to miss.

“The Sea Fury is going to be really exciting,” said Cook. “This thing is fast. It’s sick fast. It’s propeller-driven, but it’s like a 450 mph airplane.”

The Hawker Sea Fury is a British aircraft that was built in 1945 but did not see service until the Korean War. The Hawker Sea Fury at the Auburn-Opelika Airshow will be flown by Dave Peeler.

Other demonstrations will include a T-6 Texan Warbird, an obnoxiously loud WWII trainer plane that was used to train all of the fighter pilots before the war; the Twin Tiger Team of YAK-55’s from Tiger Airshows who will be doing crazy smoke and tricks; two retired U.S. Army AH-1 Attack Helicopters flown by two retired U.S. Army aviators and much more.

In addition to the aerial demonstrations and warbird flights there will also be several aircraft and military vehicles on static display for event attendees to see up close. The 7th Annual Touch a Truck event has also moved their location to become a part of the Auburn-Opelika Airshow.

Event attendees will also have the opportunity to take tethered hot air balloon rides in the State Farm hot air balloon, take a Huey ‘Helicopter ride with the Sky Soldiers and visit the CAF Red Tail Squadron Exhibit housed on-site at the airshow.

Tickets to the airshow are $12 for adults and $8 for children. Family Four Packs include two adult tickets and two kids’ tickets for $35. Admission for children 6 or younger is free.

Tickets to the airshow are on sale in advance online at or you can pick them up at the Auburn Ticket Service store in downtown Auburn, both Auburn and Opelika BB&T locations, both Auburn and Opelika Charter Bank locations, the Auburn Chamber of Commerce, the Opelika Chamber of Commerce and at the Auburn University Regional Airport.

In the event of rain, the airshow will be moved to Sunday, May 12th.

All proceeds from the Auburn-Opelika airshow will benefit the Community Foundation of East Alabama, Inc., a 501 (c)(3) tax exempt organization.
